> Vehicular traffic has commenced on the 9.75-kilometer-long Kachi Dargah-Bidupur six-lane bridge over the Ganga river in Bihar ahead of its official inauguration. Built at a cost of approximately Rs 5,000 crore, the project reduces travel time between North and South Bihar while providing seamless connectivity to Raghopur Diyara.

Vehicular traffic has started moving on the 9.75-kilometer-long six-lane bridge constructed over the Ganga river between Kachi Dargah in Patna and Bidupur in Vaishali district ahead of its official inauguration. Although the formal dedication of the bridge is yet to take place, the administration and construction agencies have allowed vehicular movement, with cars, buses, trucks, autos, and two-wheelers now actively plying across the structure. Amid rising water levels in the Ganga river and monsoon flood conditions, the bridge is serving as a vital lifeline for residents of North and South Bihar as well as the Raghopur Diyara region.

The entire project has been built at an estimated cost of around Rs 5,000 crore with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Bihar. The total project length, including approach roads, is approximately 20 kilometers (around 19.5 kilometers), comprising the main 9.75-kilometer extradosed cable bridge across the Ganga river and nearly 10 kilometers of approach roads. Construction was carried out under the supervision of the Bihar Road Development Corporation (BSRDCL) by a joint venture of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and South Korea-based Daewoo.

In terms of technical specifications, the Ganga bridge features a total of 66 piers, with the span between consecutive piers measuring approximately 150 meters. A 75-meter cantilever span extends from each side of a pier, and expansion joints are placed at intervals of every 450 meters. To support the superstructure, 14 stay cables—seven on each side—are attached to each 22.5-meter-tall pylon. The bridge deck, measuring roughly 32.5 meters (about 106 feet) in width, accommodates three traffic lanes in each direction, a central divider, side crash barriers, and pedestrian footpaths. A speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour has been designated for the bridge, allowing commuters to cross the river stretch in roughly 6 to 8 minutes.

The opening of the bridge has provided substantial relief to residents of Raghopur Diyara in Vaishali district, who previously had to depend primarily on boats to travel during the monsoon and flood season. Local commuters noted that reaching Patna has now become significantly smoother and quicker. Similarly, vehicles traveling from North Bihar and Samastipur previously faced severe congestion at Hajipur, Paswan Chowk, and the Mahatma Gandhi Setu. Drivers and truck operators traveling along the new bridge reported saving at least two to three hours in transit time, resulting in considerable savings of both fuel and time.

At the northern terminus of the bridge, construction is underway on a modern toll plaza featuring FASTag-enabled lanes, an administrative office building, and an emergency health center designed to provide prompt medical treatment in the event of accidents. Meanwhile, at the Kachi Dargah circular interchange loop on the Patna side, the country's first Bridge Museum is being developed, where 3D projections will demonstrate the design and construction techniques used to build the bridge. According to the video, the bridge connects to NH 31 and will provide direct onward connectivity towards Samastipur, the Amas-Darbhanga corridor, and the Patna Ring Road, paving the way for a planned 28 lanes of total bridge connectivity across the Ganga river around the capital city of Patna.
